Love is love.

It’s been a minute! But of course I couldn’t miss out on posting one of my favourite round-ups of the year with the day of love just around the corner. Valentine’s Day is almost here, a way to honour love and strengthen the bond between loved ones and which also happens to be a favourite around here. I’ve been glued to social media and TV this weekend, barely able to pull myself away from the heartbreaking scenes coming out of Ukraine. It’s so hard to write about design and art during times like this and it always seems so trivial in comparison to the pain and suffering that is transpiring.

I’m sure I wasn’t alone feeling helpless, lost and numb from all the doom-scrolling. And when speaking to a friend about all the happenings this weekend, she had pointed me in the direction of a Ukrainian chef, Olia Hercules, based in the UK, who was updating information in the Ukraine via contacts and family she has there on her Instagram account.

Sadly, this morning Olia posted that a historical museum was reportably blown up in Ivankiv (Kyiv) and 25 works by Ukranian folk artist, Maria Prymachenko was lost. As Olia said in her post, “This is a huge loss to us all”. (Above collage by me).

A Dove Has Spread Her Wings and Asks for Peace, 1982

An Ukranian village folk art painter, Maria Prymachenko (1909-1997), was involved with drawing, embroidery and painting ceramics, representative of naïve art. Her piece, “A Dove Has Spread Her Wings and Asks for Peace, 1982, remarkably speaks volumes in today’s unsettling climate.

 

As I struggled today on where to go forward with my writing here on the blog during a time like this, I thought  I’d share one of my coping mechanisms —leaning into the arts where I like to escape for a while during times like this.

 

So I thought I could share a few beautiful pieces from Maria Prymachenko’s work. Her compositions are so ornamental and rhythmic and almost meditative. Let’s take a look.

Today I’m excited to kick off a special holiday series I’m starting this season called “Handmade Holiday”.  Before I begin and a special note —I’m creating this series pro bono as my contribution of giving back to such an important creative community I’ve embraced over the years.  

For those of you who have been around with us these past 16 years online, you’ll remember our Poppytalk Handmade online marketplace (perhaps we were ahead of our time— in light of the now pandemic and all the online marketplaces popping up these days). Our support to the handmade community over the years has not waivered, and I’m proud to continue this tradition with this season’s series. Fun fact: Our tagline since inception (2005) has been “The beautiful, the decayed and the handmade”. 

I’m also starting a little early (for those asking about posting anything holiday before Remembrance Day) due to the well-known fact of the possibility of shipping congestions, supplies, etc) due to the Pandemic. Back in 2008 we posted 101 Reasons to Buy Handmade, and this year that post seems even more valid than ever, but I’m adding one more to it that I came across the other day from @snakeoakfarm on Instagram  —  Because “The work of artisans is not sitting on cargo ships”. 

I can’t wait to share more throughout the days ahead, and to start, I’m proud to feature one of my most favourite artists, Clare Elsaesser. Check her work out below!

If you were to do a search on the blog for Clare’s work (and if you’re an OG of reading Poppytalk), you’d find or remember our posts on her beautiful work going as far back as 2010 (or that’s as far back as my search would find).  She used to go by the name of Tastes Orangey, which always intrigued me back in the day, and I’m continually pulled into her work and style still today. She’s also an amazing supporter and raises awareness of anti-racism, driving donations and sharing information in support of justice and equality. 
 
So when I found out that she was offering a holiday sale on her large format prints from now through to December 1st/21, I had to quickly share! I mean, how beautiful to gift someone one of her gorgeous prints? I’m imagining them hanging over a bed or dresser in a bedroom, or anywhere really where daydreams and dreams are encouraged.  Here’s her links:

The Emily Carr Grad Show has always been a must see for us each May, and this year due to the pandemic, the University is hosting the show virtually so everyone locally and from around the world can explore the grad show virtually.

]]> Collages + Once Upon a Lockdown https://poppytalk.com/2021/05/collages-once-upon-a-lockdown.html Sat, 15 May 2021 05:34:00 +0000 https://poppytalk.com/?p=13541 I am absolutely in love and inspired by these collages I spotted in the latest issue of South African-based craft magazine, Ideas. Four friends, (Liezl Van Schalkwyk @myheartdreaming, Lianne Smuts @studio_of_lianne, Anel Stricker-Bessinger @anelsb and Derika Volpi @derikavol), who equally have a passion for visual journals, planned ‘a weekend get-together’ via zoom during a hard lockdown this past year. The week prior to their ‘weekend’, the four each put together bits of inspiration from their daily lives to use as a starting point for their creations. The result of that weekend eventually made them decide to scan the journal pages
