Q1. Congrats to you both on such a stunning book! We have a lot in common with our mutual love of rural retreats. In fact, a couple of the cabins in your book we’ve featured on the blog in the past. For me it pulls me back to my roots in rural Alberta and brings me comfort to a more quieter, tranquil life, something I long for more and more these days. What brought you both to Canada and the love to escape to a home in rural settings?

We arrived on Canadian shores some 14 years past with ‘Colin and Justin’s Home Heist’: our first North American series. Airing on HGTV Canada, it ran for four 13-episode seasons – in total we made 52 fun filled hours of décor and drama, comedy and home style. Coming off the back of ‘How Not To Decorate’ (one of our UK shows that also aired on HGTV Canada) we travelled the land, whilst filming Home Heist, in search of needy abodes. And we made them pretty: with LOTS of colour. There may also have been a preponderance of out scale boutonnieres. We couldn’t possibly say… And, with the passage of time, we soon fell in love with the great outdoors. Our first cottage was in Muskoka, but we didn’t truly embrace the art of escape until we discovered our beloved Haliburton, home of many C+J fixer upper adventures catalogued during ‘Colin and Justin’s Cabin Pressure’ on the Cottage Life network. We love rustic modern: it’s our professional lifeblood – one of our other shows (also on Cottage Life) is Great Canadian Cottages. Check the network’s listings and schedules and give it a watch. Sure, one or two of the homes on that show feature in Escapology, but the book and the TV series are very different. Very different, but both exciting and inspirational.

Q2. As you mention in your book, the book is not only for dreamers, but also for doers. So having renovated multiple dwellings in your past, what are the three most important aspects to you for choosing a fixer-upper?

1. You can change everything about your subject cottage, but you can’t really change its location, unless of course you hire a lifting company to literally pick it up and transport it over land to a new spot. And yes: just for the record, we’ve done that too. Generally speaking, though, our point is this: a cottage or cabin you can improve, but its location and topography are kind of fixed, huh? So choose wisely, and enjoy your beautiful location for years to come. 2. Unless you’re buying a wicked deal ‘off market’, search in conjunction with an accredited realtor to appraise the best opportunities. Sometimes a realtor will have ‘pocket deals’: in these cases, if a seller wants to avoid the hassle of loads of people marching through their home, they’ll have told their realtor to quietly sell at an agreed price, without advertising. These opportunities can work in your favour as they avoid the prospect bargain cottage being exposed to a larger quantity of potential buyers. 3. Know your limitations: that diamond in the rough could turn out to be a can of worms if you haven’t properly evaluated its every detail. Are you up to replacing a roof, digging a foundation or knocking down walls? If you feel better suited to décor, new floors and replacing old faucets, then choose a cottage or cabin you can realistically tackle. DON’T bite off more than you can chew. Invest in a good inspection, and factor in all costs and associated spend. Then, and only then, dive in…

Q3. When it comes to decorating a getaway space, what are your suggestions for keeping it looking authentic, and real?

We’re all about the rustic vibe. Avoid fitted carpets as these are hard to maintain at the cottage. We tend to install engineered boards as they have sufficient structural integrity to endure all seasons. We love mismatched furniture, but finding a ‘connection’ that pulls it all together is important. Maybe you’ve got six ‘odd’ dining chairs? Paint (or stain) them one colour to make them feel like they have a relationship. Keep accessories in the ‘country’ mood. Think chunky ceramics in lovely earthy tones. And warm textural throws and cushions to amplify the cosy, indulgent feel…

Q4. In your book you feature escapes of all styles and sizes. I’m sure it’s hard to choose just one, but with that in mind, what style do you naturally gravitate towards?

We TRY and love all our ‘babies’ with equal measure, and we’ve space in our hearts for all the home from homes in Escapology – whether those we’ve personally designed or those by other creatives we admire. But Blackbirch in Haliburton is a joy to behold: all modern rustic and cool woodsy tones. Similarly, the Tree House by Lynne Knowlton is spectacular: imagine hiding up there, amongst those beautiful branches. Oh, and The Vipp Shelter in Sweden is a modernist joy, the rectilinear edifice beset with acres of glass and jet toned steel.

Q7. One thing I’ve always loved about you both, are your DIY ideas. You always have the coolest projects. How did you become so good at creating things?

We started out A LONG time ago! Twenty year ago, our first show on BBC 1 in Britain was called Housecall. On that series, we up-cycled and created magic using stuff that other people discard. It’s a habit we’ve always had, really. In short, we see opportunity and magic in other people’s discard. And come on: being Scottish our budgets are always ‘careful’. Lol – we’re not ‘tight’, just sensible when it comes to spending…

Q8. And finally, if you could go anywhere to escape in your book, where would you go first?

We’d be happy in any of them, but Airship 002 (in our native Scotland) would be a dream getaway. We normally fly between Canada and Scotland at least once a month, but due to the Covid crisis, our travel itineraries have become strictly compromised. It’s 8 months since we were on the other side of The Atlantic, and we are SO homesick. Guess we’re missing our family and our friends in Scotland. But as we said we’d be happy in any of the 24 escapes, or any of the 125 or so featured rooms. Casa En El Bosque in Mexico is astounding, and The Back Country Hut (which features on the cover) is super lovely, as is Park Corner Barn in England. We truly hope everyone finds something to love in the pages of Escapology. With our world as it is at the moment, we believe everyone dreams of getting away. Of taking their feet off the gas. Of releasing the pressure. And we hope Escapology helps people (if even in some small way) to escape. If only for the time they’re lost in its beautiful pages…

Thank you Colin and Ryan! You new book is perfect for someone who likes to dream, is living the dream or needs help making it happen.
Today I’m super-excited to interview one of my favourite designers based here in Canada, the very talented, Arren Williams. Arren as some of you already know, is a renowned designer and interior stylist in the design world, having graced magazines, newspapers and television for the last two decades. He, along with his husband, David, also founded Casa Cubista, a home collection centred around a contemporary take on traditional Portuguese craft. And most recently, Arren’s been freelancing on some very cool design projects. Early in 2019 he launched a collection for the home titled Arcade in collaboration with a few companies which is now available exclusively at Hudson’s Bay. He’s also one of those people, that I have never met in person, but know from emailing back and forth throughout the years and watching him on television, is just a real stand up guy. So it’s an honour to have him here on the blog today, knowing his super busy schedule (he was even on Cityline this morning), not to mention he and David are also renovating their home. He’s got a busy life. (So thank you Arren)! And readers… I know you’ll enjoy our interview.

Q. I always love to get a little background to start things off and love hearing how people started in their field. I read in your “About” page on your blog that at age 12, you mentioned that you weren’t playing with G.I. Joe, but with Art Deco clocks, shall we start there?

It’s true! Both my grandmother’s played an outsize influence on my life.

Pauline was a can-can dancer in Paris in the 1920’s, and I learned to love all of the big Holly-wood movie musicals of the twenties and thirties because of her. She’d always critique the dancers if they weren’t in synch, or didn’t point their toes on a kick, while I was blown away by the Art Deco sets and all of the glamour.

Lena was an antique dealer with a great eye for a hidden gem. She would blag her way into church and jumble sales before they were open, and I’d tag along to learn how to bargain and what to look for. It was such an incredible kind of accidental training for the rest of my life!

So really, my eye was trained because of both of them. And, even though I don’t have any of the clocks in my collection any more, I do still have a glam alabaster dressing table mirror that’s survived a move across the atlantic, and numerous moves since. More than forty years on and I still love it.

For 2021 there are some exciting things on the horizon, but I can’t quite let the cat out of the bag yet! Things that were supposed to happen this year have obviously been delayed, but good things are definitely worth waiting for.

Q. I love your use of bold graphics and colours in your designs, what excites you currently in the design world?

Thanks! I’m such a magpie when it comes to influences, and I have a bit of a photographic memory for designs that I’m always calling upon. Right now I’m really into the tiles by designer Elisa Passino, they manage to feel both contemporary and vintage at the same time.

And I’m always inspired by interior stylists, since I know the work that goes into creating a great shot. Check out Rebecca de Boehmler from the UK and Amaya De Toledo from Spain.

Q. I love that you’ve been speaking up on your Instagram for the BIPOC + Black Lives Matter movement as of late. Would you like to talk a little bit more about your activism?

As a non-BIPOC in the design world it’s very much about understanding my privilege and then taking the steps to do things differently, more mindfully, like stepping back and making space for BIPOC voices to be heard. I also realize that my platform, while small, should be used both positively and politically to be a part of making that change.

And I don’t know that activism is the right word to describe it. For me it’s about thinking every day about what I can do better and how I can be better.

Q. With BIPOC and Black Lives Matter with design in mind, what art or interior design excites you right now?

The work of Black artist Kendra Dandy is totally ace, it’s so colourful and direct, and political at the same time. I’ve also newly discovered queer artist Jeffrey Cheung, who’s work is painterly, fresh and expressive and whose been using his work to fundraise for and support the Black Trans community.

Q. Being immersed in the design world for so many years, how do you keep things fresh and stay inspired?

It’s really simple, I’m always excited for the thing I haven’t seen yet!

Q. With Covid happening, how have you been adjusting to this new normal (so to speak)? Did you already have a home office to work at, or did you need to create a space to work? Also, what are you really missing right now?

Well, initially, lockdown life was pretty close to how life was for us in Portugal in the winter. Very, very quiet. And home office? You mean the dining table! That’s where I normally work during the day. Though the dogs think my actual job is to open the back door for them to go out and chase squirrels.

During the beginning, like everyone we really missed seeing friends. As thinks have slowly re-laxed, we’ve been having people over in the garden for socially distant get togethers which has really softened the blow. We’ve never spent so much time in our back yard!

Q. What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the business?

I really want to see the design industry become more actively diverse, so I want to encourage kids from different backgrounds to head to design school to shake things up. And I think just about everyone in design is happy to chat with and encourage young new talent, I know I am. Hit me up on Instagram and say hi!

Q. It’s always interesting to get a little background and how people begin in their field. For those that may be just starting out, where did you both train or study or how did your career as an artist begin? And did you always know you wanted to paint?

A. I am often asked about if I always wanted to paint, and it seems so odd looking back, but I don’t ever remember a divide between creating as a child to an adult- it is just what I always did, all those small steps along the way equal one big step. One thing I do know, is that I have a deep need to create, it is not a feeling of obligation that I should get back in the studio, it is almost like a hunger that has to be fed. My mother always would tease me when we traveled as a bigger family to France, and I wouldn’t be able to relax or be at ease until I went out and had a few hours of painting or sketching—its very much like an internal gnawing. I have to release that energy or that demon. I created throughout my childhood, no television or anything electronic except story records leads to a lot of free time to let your mind wander, which is still my favourite feeling. Of letting your mind drift into different unintentional dimensions, almost like meditation, it’s very relaxing as little glimpses of images start to morph, come into focus and disappear in your mind’s eye. All this daydreaming combined with being very shy during high school led me to spending a lot of time in the art rooms, and to taking courses at Emily Carr University and Arts Umbrella. Still, all these years later, I remember those lessons and projects I created more vividly than anything from my adult years. I went on to University to study visual arts, and after my first year moved over to study art history- which mostly taught me how to create long rambling free association style sentences—this being case in point. I continued to paint in all my spare time in whatever environment I was in. I rowed with the Canadian National Rowing team, and remember running around taking photos before a race was to begin on distance lake shores throughout Canada and the US, or coming home exhausted after the third workout of the day but feeling totally alive and energetic if I could find some time in my tiny bedroom boarding house filled with other young women, to paint and dissolve into that meditative escapism that I mentioned before. This all led me to eventually having my first exhibit in my home town of West Vancouver, and with that success at the municipal gallery, I could tumble earnings into more supplies. At 23 when I graduated, I collaborated with a friend and held my own first exhibit in his framing shop, and I was feeling cheeky, so sent invitations to Vancouver’s top galleries. Barry Mowatt Gallery and Diane Ferris Gallery both called me expressing interest, and within weeks, I had my first exhibit with Diane Ferris. It was so loose and fluid and instinctual in a way back then.

Q. Your art has evolved through the years from flowers in vases, to the vases slowly disappearing, and now almost close-ups or snapshots of your older works blown up. I get the feeling, this new stage is only the beginning of what’s to come with Bobbie Burgers. Can you explain a bit how you got to where you are, finding your style?

A. Being self taught, I feel that the last 18-20 years have been about earning the tools and techniques that make up my creative toolbox. By the time one has painted a tulip 100, 1000 times, it becomes second nature, and when it has become second nature I could start riffing on it. I don’t know how I ended up becoming quite a realist over the years, it happened so gradually. One day I looked back and realized that now that I had the skills, I had to start breaking the rules and bringing florals or landscapes to a more instinctual place. I came to see that still lifes and florals are anything but still. They actually change a lot more than a person would if doing a study: within days flowers go from closed and perfect soldiers of similarity, their youth being all about clean assimilation, to meeting middle age where their character really starts to show, and in their last days, they seem to lay it all out, showing their true colours. I like to think of flowers as portraits of people. Not only will the flowers change over the week or two of painting them, but light will move and change in the studio, and my emotions of that time will be layered in as well—so I came to look at my painting as a layering of past, present and future. When I had played with that splintering effect for a couple of years, I came to see flowers as real independents, not needing to be rooted in time or space at all. And then other ways of capturing time passing came into play. Like leaving in unintentional drips to show a moment in time, or bigger more immediate brushwork that really showed an arm movement or a feeling, like impatience, impermanence, aggression of lightheartedness, freedom.

Q. Let’s talk about your tools a bit. We noticed some very large brushes in your studio and alongside painting on canvas, we see you are also working on a special paper for oil painting. And that water bottle! Do you mind explaining your process or the progression of? And how long does it take you to create one of your larger pieces

A. I find that every few years my process changes. For example, many years ago, I painted on unstretched canvas as I liked the lack of borders, and it allowed me to crop and choose which areas to focus on. Over time that disappeared and new challenges presented themselves: painting so large, it is sometimes easier to paint horizontal and then I put it back up on the wall, and it switches back and forth, wall/ground as the work develops. I think the most important change in the last year, is having the space to work on several large projects at once, which allows more time for reflection and not the need to conclude so quickly. To keep things constantly fresh in my mind, I like to reference older pieces, but see them in a new light, which is why I keep a few paintings every year. Living with them sparks new ideas. I am shamelessly self-referencing and insular in my process. Yes, my brushes have grown in size dramatically, and I use my drop cloth more and more like a palette. I have always enjoyed working on paper as it seems so ephemeral and light, whether it be by creating monotypes, charcoal drawings, or collage—they are all immediate mediums, and I am an impatient person, so they suit me well, but I would like to move into collaborating with print makers, as it would be interesting to spar ideas with another creator

What a cool opportunity. Will we be seeing more of that side of your artistry?

A. I love working with ceramics. I have been going to the ceramic studio for over 15 years, and before that in my youth. I would always be so curious how I could bring ceramics into my artistic practice, and would just play around with it, mostly with my kids and wonder how it would take form. I often start by creating things for ourselves, and wondered what a whole wall of expanding and contracting anemones would look like so made my first ten large scale pieces for our amorphous bathroom wall. When I created the piece for the Simons department store, I was making two or three pieces a week, over the span of a year. There were many failed attempts, or pieces that exploded, or were too thin. But just as with painting, the sheer repetition saw a gradual discovery and evolution; slowly the flowers became about the essence, or a feeling, almost unrecognizable but one could see its roots. Then it became about showing that it was actually a movement I was capturing, so a falling petal became a two foot long stretch, like a brush stroke, one couldn’t tell anymore if it was a piece of a flower, a brushstroke or just a large movement of body pushing clay. One medium and experiment always bleeds over into others. Two years ago I created a series of multimedia works on paper that were extremely three dimensional, some pieces floating on stainless steel pins Billy would secure through layers of support. That definitely influenced our wall installation, and my works on canvas. I had wanted to use all my favourite ingredients; pastel, pencil, inks, acrylic, fabric—into one piece—my painting learned from this freedom and also became more layered. I am now working on free standing sculptures, some like ceramic figures, melding and twisting flowers We bought a high powered chainsaw with a presision small blade in the summer who has yet to express herself, and then there are all these industrial materials near our studio. Every time I pass a pile, my scrappy, waste-not personality, imagines twisted metal sculptures in brilliant hues.

Q. What designers/makers/architects, etc do you look up to, are influenced by or inspire you?

A. I have huge respect for all these careers or creative pursuits—for a designer to be able to create a chair, for example, that can be at once current and timeless for 50, 60, 70 years is an incredible feat. Like the ever playful and brilliant Ray and Charles Eames. My favourite designer right now is Patricia Urquila—she creates works of art in the form of furniture- truly- we have one of her lounge chairs in our bedroom and it is so precious to me- it looks like floral origami, made of rich red and white wool felt. My favourite artists always ebb and flow- my all time favourite is Joan Mitchel– her colours are perfection, they leap and dance, her strong brush stroke and combative yet childlike personality only make her more intriguing. I recently discovered the painter elaine de Kooning, and that was another eye opener—her work is totally fresh, skilled and like no other form of portraiture I have seen, knowing how hard it is to create a style all ones own, and she did this in such competitive and tricky subject matter and all in the shadow of her husband Willem. We need to celebrate these amazing artists and make them household names as they often outshine their male counterparts. My favourite architect is Newell Jacobsen. I like repetition in shape, I like honest houses that are not trendy and deal with flow inside, their relationship to the land they sit on or in.
