Inspired by the Nordic sauna culture, a collection of everyday objects

The much-awaited collaboration from two of our favourite Scandinavian brands has arrived and it does not disappoint. The limited-edition collection which consists of 26 products with vibrant prints, ranging from furniture to glassware and textiles will be available globally starting this March. IKEA and Marimekko launch the BASTUA collection.

IKEA and Marimekko Launch the Bastua Collection

The collction name, BASTUA, is a term used to describe sauna in Småland, a region in Southern Sweden where IKEA was founded. As a starting point, the collection embraces the idea of self-care rituals, enjoying time by the lake over warm summer months or winding down after a long day.

Patterns inspired by Nordic nature

One of the focal point prints is inspired by the large, decorative rhubarb leaves that sometimes grow next to sauna buildings in Finland and is displayed on many items including the iconic FRAKTA bag.

Capturing the essence of Marimekko’s Finnish roots and its connection to the historic origins of sauna culture was a fundamental part of the design journey and the creation of the BASTUA prints, says Rebekka Bay, Creative Director at Marimekko.

“Nordic furniture design has always been characterised by clean lines and simple constructions that focus on function” says Mikael Axelsson, Designer at IKEA. “The BASTUA side table is my take on this heritage as it is made of birch veneer and with a high edge that keeps things in place.”

The collection consists of a variety of items ranging from furniture, glassware, and textiles with the vibrant prints. The robes, towels and the first-ever sauna bucket are items one would traditionally use when enjoying a sauna, while the other items are encouraged to be used before or after a sauna ritual whether it’s enjoying a light meal, a cushiony soft seat to feel more grounded, and ways to create a more calm atmosphere such as lighting the BASTUA candle which is infused with aromas ranging from elderflower, rhubarb and sweet vanilla.

Ranging from furniture, glassware and textiles with vibrant prints, the collection is intended to follow Marimekko’s mission which is to empower people to be happy as they are and bring joy to their everyday lives through bold prints and colours.

A Gentle Pink

Raspberry Blush may be Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year for 2023, but personally, I’m drawn to another colour in this year’s palette, Tofino Sunset (or Conch Shell if you’re looking at their U.S. site).

“A gentle pink reminiscent of sepia tone, this dusty hue brings to mind thoughts of dusk captured by a vintage film camera. Tofino Sunset may bring a blush to your space, but this hue is not shy. This comforting colour balances out the bold vibes of this palette, appearing almost neutral alongside such striking shades.”

From tiles to nail polish, to wallpaper and beyond, this subtler version of pink lends itself well to surfaces like lighter-toned woods and pale walls, creating a more casual, laid back vibe. I’ve collected a few images with that palette and complimentary colours in mind. Let’s take a look!

Another beautiful example of a faded terracotta tile with lighter-toned wood from the folks at Himmee. Love the combination of the simple square tiles alongside the copper faucet.

Recently I’ve been noticing a little micro trend of sorts that falls within the casual laid back look we’ve been seeing a lot of these past couple of years. I think with more of us spending a fair bit of time at home, thoughts of comfort and cozy have been on the forefront. And what says comfort and cozy more than a few extra layers of mattresses “Princess and the Pea” style?

I was having a hard time labeling these little roll up mattresses, some call them toppers, others daybeds, and others, simply mattresses, but Princess and the Pea was what came to mind initially. Whatever you call them, I think they are the perfect little accessory this summer that can adapt inside to out, or simply just to protect the top of your sofa from day to day wear. Check out what I mean below.

Inspired by the surfing lifestyle, IKEA launches the KÅSEBERGA collection

In 2019, IKEA and the World Surf League announced a collaboration to better understand the everyday life of people with a mobile and active way of living in close rhythm with the ocean. The result is a collection of practical and beautifully designed products for the home and life on the go.

The range of KÅSEBERGA includes more than 25 products intended for the home or wherever life takes them. Among those are a hand plane for body surfing, a beach chair, a portable grill, a coffee table (which resembles a vintage surfboard) and a bag uniquely designed to function well for beach clean-ups.

Together with the World Surf League and the reputable surfers Kassia Meador and Rob Machado, the design process has revolved around including functionality, more recycled materials and promoting a more circular lifestyle. As a result, a big part of the products in the KÅSEBERGA collection are made of recycled polyester, while others are made of renewables, such as bamboo and cork.

The KÅSEBERGA collection will launch globally in May 2022. Let’s take a look!

The series is based on a selection of vintage fabrics Marie has collected over the years, from coffee-stained french linens to vintage floral curtains. The result is a collection which inspires the possibility of unexpected, bold and brave interiors. A look Marie has become known for. Let’s take a look.
